Experience the Inca Trail with an Overnight Camp!

Our 2 day Inca Trail with camping is the shorter version of the classic 4-day trek to Machu Picchu, but still packed with history and scenery. This 2-day Inca Trail with camping experience is led by a professional guide, with a cook and porters to support you throughout the journey. The adventure covers just 17 km—from the starting point at Km 104 to our cozy campsite at Puente Ruinas. Along the way, you’ll visit archaeological sites like Chachabamba, known for its water ceremonies and llama offerings, and Wiñay Wayna, a stunning terrace complex with ceremonial baths, before tackling a steep mountain climb.

From here, the trail winds along a rugged path to the southeast corner of the main complex, leading to the remains of Intipunku, the Sun Gate. This is where hikers get their first, classic view of Machu Picchu. The route also offers unique angles and hidden perspectives, and if you’re lucky, you might spot llamas grazing in old stone barns along the way, and even inside Machu Picchu itself.

Highlights of the 2 Day Inca Trail with Camping

  • You’ll spend one night at a cozy campsite near Puente Ruinas, perfect for nature lovers, surrounded by the mountains near Machu Picchu.
  • Includes visits to the archaeological sites of Chachamamba and Wiñaywayna and the Sun Gate, where you’ll have your first panoramic views of Machu Picchu.
  • On day 2, enjoy a guided tour in Machu Picchu, covering its most important spots with time for exploring (entry tickets included).
  • Return on the tourist-class train to Ollantaytambo, then continue by bus to Cusco. You can also upgrade to the Vistadome panoramic train for stunning views along the way.

Day 1: Cusco – Ollantaytambo - Km 104 - Sun Gate - Puente Ruinas Campsite

Start your Short 2 day Inca Trail with camping

The adventure starts early, with a 4:30 a.m. pick-up from your hotel. We travel through the Sacred Valley to the Ollantaytambo train station and board the train to Km 104, a scenic journey of about an hour and a half. After passing the checkpoint, we begin our 2 day Inca Trail with camping trek. The first stretch takes us through the beautiful Chachabamba site before continuing on a four-hour hike to the impressive Wiñay Wayna archaeological complex, where we explore and enjoy a box lunch (vegetarian options available upon request).

Refreshed, we’ll continue hiking for an hour and a half to the Sun Gate or Intipunku (the first stunning lookout of Machu Picchu). As part of our 2 day Inca Trail, this is where we’re rewarded with our first spectacular view of Machu Picchu. We’ll have time to take pictures and soak in the scenery before our final 40-minute gentle hike down to the citadel. Today, we enjoy the vistas from the observatory; the full guided tour takes place on day two.

To end the day, you can either hike to our camp at Puente Ruinas, whichever suits your energy levels. Upon arrival, our camp cook will have a delicious dinner ready, the perfect close to a day of history, nature, and adventure.

We’ll cover the mystical history of this incredible place. You will have the opportunity to visit the “Temple of the Sun”, the “Royal Palace”, the “Main Temple”, the “Temple of the Three Windows” and the “Sun Dial”. Here, we promise an unforgettable experience! After the guided tour, you’ll have free time to enjoy the views from the observatories and get that classic postcard photo of Machu Picchu.

Things to Know before taking the Inca Trail

If you are planning to hike the short Inca Trail with camping, we highly recommend booking as early as possible. Check availability with us and secure your spot without waiting!

  • The 2 day Inca Trail is closed every February for maintenance and conservation projects, as well as due to heavy seasonal rains that can affect trail conditions and safety. During this month, no departures are available for the 2 day Inca Trail with camping or any other Inca Trail variations.
  • If permits for your preferred date are sold out for the 2 day Inca Trail with camping, you may choose to pre-book for a different available date, plan your trip for the following year, or consider an alternative trek to Machu Picchu while maintaining a similar experience.
  • Permits issued for the inca trail campsites are strictly non-transferable. Canceled permits cannot be reassigned to other travelers, as the government system is designed to prevent agencies from booking with incorrect information and later changing names for last-minute clients.

Permits for the Short Inca Trail with camping (included)

The 2 day inca trail with camping requires a special government-issued permit, just like the Classic 4-Day Inca Trail. These permits are limited and sell out quickly, especially during peak season (May to September). We recommend booking 3–6 months in advance.

Your permit will be purchased as soon as we receive your details and deposit. Permits are issued in your name for a specific date and cannot be transferred.

Passport Information for Booking

To process your permit for the 2 day Inca Trail, we will need your passport details: full name, passport number, nationality, and date of birth.

* If the information is incorrect, you will be denied entry to the Inca Trail.
* The only update allowed is your passport number.
* Your permit also includes entry to Machu Picchu.

Physical Preparation & Difficulty Level

The Short Inca Trail is considered a moderate hike and is part of the 2 day Inca Trail with camping, covering approximately 12 km (7.5 miles) on the first day. It’s an excellent option for travelers who want to experience the magic of the Inca Trail in less time while still enjoying stunning scenery and archaeological sites along the way. You can expect:

  • 4 to 6 hours of hiking, including sections with steep stone steps and uphill climbs that require a reasonable level of physical fitness.
  • An altitude range between 2,000 m and 2,720 m (6,560 ft – 8,924 ft), which is lower than the classic Inca Trail but still makes prior acclimatization in Cusco highly recommended.
  • No need to bring camping gear, as tents, sleeping pads, and cooking equipment are included in the 2 day Inca Trail with camping package and carried by our professional porters for your comfort.

Short Inca Trail with camping Weather

Weather in the mountains is a big deal, especially on the short inca trail with camping. It can change a lot throughout the year; there are two main seasons you should keep in mind:

✔️Dry season (June to October): Days are sunny and pleasant, but nights can get really cold, close to freezing.
✔️Rainy season (December to April): Expect plenty of rain, especially between January and March when showers are at their heaviest.
✔️Best time to go: Shoulder months: April, May, October, November. Good weather and less crowds. Rain can still occur in Machu Picchu.

Remember, the Inca Trail is always closed in February for maintenance, conservation, and because of the heavy rains. Check out our COMPLETE PACKING LIST FOR THE INCA TRAIL.

Transportation

All transportation is included in this trek. We will pick you up directly from your hotel in Cusco between 4:30 a.m. and 5:30 a.m. (around 7:00 am if you stay in Ollantaytambo). From there, we will drive to Ollantaytambo to board the train to Km 104, the starting point of the trek.

Accommodation

You’ll spend 1 night in comfortable Eureka tents at a private campsite in Puente Ruinas, just outside Aguas Calientes. The site is set in peaceful green surroundings along the Urubamba River, with the mountains of Machu Picchu as your backdrop.

Tents are set up for double or twin occupancy / Campsite includes private facilities and all necessary camping equipment. If you prefer a single tent, it can be arranged for an additional fee, subject to availability. Please let us know at the time of booking.

Food & Water on the Trail

On the first day, you will receive a snack to enjoy during the trek. Dinner will be served at the Campsite, and breakfast will be provided the following morning. Lunch on the last day is not included.

A 500 mL bottle of water is included in the lunch box, but you should bring your own bottles or a hydration system. We recommend carrying about 3 liters of water for the trek.

Luggage storage

You won’t need to take all your luggage for this trip. Extra luggage can be stored safely at your hotel in Cusco or at the train station in Ollantaytambo. If stored in Ollantaytambo, our driver will collect it on the day of your trek and return it to our office.

Most hotels in Cusco offer free luggage storage for returning guests. If not, we can store it for you at our facilities — just let us know in advance.

Extra Tickets for the Short Inca Trail with camping

You may add optional upgrades to your tour:

Huayna Picchu Entrance + Circuit 3

  • 45-minute hike to the summit next to Machu Picchu, 2,693 m high.

Pre-departure briefing

One or two days before departure, our representative will meet you at your hotel in Cusco for a briefing with your guide. You will receive all necessary information about the trek and have any questions answered.

If you have rented extra equipment (sleeping bags, duffle bags, etc.), it will be delivered to you at this time. Briefings usually take place between 6:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. — the exact time will be confirmed when you check in at our office two days before the trek.

FAQs – Short Inca Trail 2 Days with Camping

What’s the difference between the Classic Inca Trail and the Short Inca Trail?

The Classic Inca Trail takes 4 days, has a moderate difficulty level, and includes camping along the route. You’ll visit around 6 Inca archaeological sites and enter Machu Picchu on the last day. This route is usually done in larger groups.

The Short Inca Trail takes 2 days, is done in small private groups, has a lower difficulty, and does not include camping. Instead, you’ll spend the night in Aguas Calientes.

What’s the best time to hike the 2 Day Inca Trail?

We recommend hiking the Short Inca Trail during the dry season, from April to November. During these months the sunshine is appropriate for the best photographs of the Andean landscapes.

Don’t forget to check availability before making your reservation. We recommend that you reserve your space at least 4 months in advance.

Can I hike the Inca Trail without a guide?

No. Access to the Inca Trail is strictly controlled by the Peruvian Government. Only licensed tour operators and certified guides are authorized to accompany hikers. This is because the trail is a protected World Heritage Site and an important Historic Sanctuary that must be preserved.

How difficult is the 2-Day Inca Trail?

The hike is rated moderate, with some steep ascents and descents, but it’s generally manageable for most travelers. Along the way, you’ll enjoy breathtaking landscapes and discover remarkable Inca sites nestled in stunning natural settings.

Where do I camp on the 2 Day Inca Trail?

You’ll spend one night at a campsite located just outside Aguas Calientes, right next to the Urubamba River and at the foot of the iconic Machu Picchu mountains. This is the only campsite authorized for this itinerary apart from those used on the classic route.

What places will I visit on the Inca Trail with camping?

Chachabamba – Inca ruins you’ll see on the first day. Wiñaywayna – Also called “Forever Young,” the second most important site after Machu Picchu. Inti Punku (Sun Gate) – The first viewpoint to enjoy panoramic views of Machu Picchu. Machu Picchu – You’ll see the citadel on the first day. On the second day, you’ll explore Machu Picchu with a professional guide, learning its history and secrets, with free time before returning to Cusco.

What should I bring for the Short Inca Trail?

The climate is much milder than the Classic Inca trail route. However, we recommend packing warm clothing such as jackets, gloves, warm pants, and comfortable walking shoes.

What are the guides like?

Our guides are locals from Cusco and the Sacred Valley. They speak English, Spanish, and Quechua, and know the Inca Trail like the back of their hand. Most have spent 5–10 years leading hikes, sharing stories about the history, culture, and wildlife along the way. They’re also trained in first aid and come highly recommended by travelers on TripAdvisor and even by Lonely Planet.

What if I have a medical emergency on the trail?

Our guides carry a first aid kit and are trained by the Red Cross every year. They handle common issues like stomach problems or minor injuries, and serious cases are evacuated to Cusco, where the nearest modern medical facilities are. If someone can’t finish the hike, they’re usually taken back to Cusco and can rejoin the group at Machu Picchu by train. Guides and porters already have clear evacuation plans in place.
