Inca Trail 2 Days

The short Inca Trail 2-day trek will take you to Machu Picchu on an adventure that allows you to discover the wonders of this place without spending too much time, especially if you don’t have the availability for longer multi-day treks. Everything begins at kilometer 104, where this route leads you through the diverse Andean landscapes, featuring vibrant vegetation and some of the most impressive Indigenous archaeological sites, such as Chachabamba and Wiñay Wayna. The total distance covered is 12 kilometers, culminating, of course, in the unforgettable view of Machu Picchu from the Sun Gate.

Best of all, there is no need to camp, as you will stay in a very comfortable hotel located in Aguas Calientes. Our 2 Day Inca Trail is designed for travelers seeking a balance between staying active, comfortable, and above all, enjoying a sense of adventure. Our groups are kept small so you can experience a more personal and flexible journey. In addition, you will be accompanied by knowledgeable guides who will share the rich history of this ancient trail, allowing you to keep learning and being amazed along the way. This way, you will enjoy a truly meaningful route surrounded by breathtaking scenery. Our experience can also be personalized just for you.

Highlights of the 2-day Inca Trail

  • On day 1, you’ll hike through lush mountains, passing through several Inca Sites such as Chachabamba, Choquesuysuy, and Wiñay Wayna, while descending into the cloud forest.
  • At the Sun Gate, you’ll catch your first breathtaking views of Machu Picchu, the same spot the Incas once did. You’ll have plenty of time to take pictures with the citadel in the background.
  • On day 2, we wake up early to take the first bus to Machu Picchu. You’ll receive a complete introduction to the Citadel, then spend around 2 hours visiting the main highlights following circuit 2 or 3.
  • After the tour, you’ll board the bus back to Machu Picchu and, in the afternoon, take a scenic train to Ollantaytambo to finally arrive in Cusco by bus.

Short Inca Trail 2 Days Itinerary

Day 1: Cusco - Ollantaytambo - Km 104 - Aguas Calientes

Cusco to Km 104: Starting the Short Inca Trail 2 Days

We start the day super early, around 4:00 a.m., leaving your hotel in Cusco for the drive to Ollantaytambo (1.5 hours). This early departure is essential to make the most of your Short Inca Trail 2-day experience and avoid crowds along the route.

At the station, you’ll have some time to grab a quick breakfast or coffee before boarding the train to kilometer 104, the official starting point of the 2-day Inca Trail. The ride takes about 1.5 hours, and the train features comfortable seats with panoramic windows, offering incredible views of the Andes and the Urubamba River along the way.

Km 104 to Chachabamba: Entering the Inca Trail

At Km 104, we’ll hop off the train and head to the control point of the short Inca Trail. Our guide will take care of all permits, so you’ll only need to present your passport and check in with the park rangers.

From here, your inca trail 2 days adventure truly begins. We start walking through a lush cloud forest until we reach Chachabamba, located at 2,170 m (7,120 ft). This archaeological site is one of the last Inca shelters before Machu Picchu and was used as a ceremonial and administrative center, connecting the 2-day Inca Trail with other important Inca sites.

Chachabamba to Wiñay Wayna: Hiking the Original Inca Path

After exploring Chachabamba, we continue uphill along the original Inca stone steps. This section of the short Inca Trail can be a bit steep during the first couple of hours, but the pace becomes more manageable as you go.

Along the way, we’ll take short breaks to rest, enjoy the scenery, and appreciate the natural surroundings of the Andes. Around lunchtime, we’ll stop near a beautiful waterfall to enjoy a well-deserved box lunch while surrounded by nature.

We then continue toward Wiñay Wayna (2,650 m / 8,694 ft), one of the most impressive archaeological sites along the Short Inca Trail, for 2 days. Its terraces form a stunning natural amphitheater, and the site features ceremonial areas, water channels, and spectacular mountain views. From here, you may also spot the terraces of Intipata in the distance.

Wiñay Wayna to the Sun Gate: First View of Machu Picchu

After passing the final checkpoint, we continue on one of the most rewarding sections of the 2-day Inca Trail. This part of the trail gradually leads you to Intipunku, the Sun Gate.

Reaching the Sun Gate is one of the highlights of the Inca Trail 2 days, as it offers your first breathtaking panoramic view of Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu from above. This is a unique perspective that only hikers on the short Inca Trail can experience.

After enjoying the views and taking unforgettable photos, we descend for about 50 minutes towards Machu Picchu, to head to circuit 1 (where you will have a beautiful view with the Huayna Picchu mountain) to then take the bus to Aguas Calientes, where you can relax, enjoy a hot shower and dinner after completing the first day of the 2-day Short Inca Trail.

  • Hiking Distance: 12 km / 7.5 mi
  • Hiking Time: 5-6 hours
  • Highest Altitude: 2,800 m / 9,186 ft
  • Lowest Altitude: 2,040 m / 6,691 ft
  • Meals: Lunch and dinner
  • Accommodation: Hotel in Aguas Calientes

Important Note for the 2 Day Inca Trail

The 2-day Inca Trail covers approximately 12 km (7.5 miles) on the first day. You’ll need to carry a small backpack (around 25 liters) with your personal items, snacks, and a box lunch.

If you prefer not to carry your backpack during the Short Inca Trail 2 days, you can request a porter service in advance. Please contact us before your departure to arrange this option.

Day 2: Aguas Calientes - Machu Picchu - Cusco

Day 2: Exploring Machu Picchu after the Short Inca Trail 2 Days

Day 2 of the Short Inca Trail 2 days is dedicated entirely to exploring Machu Picchu, one of the most iconic archaeological sites in the world. After completing the 2 day inca trail on the previous day, this is your opportunity to fully experience the history and beauty of the ancient Inca citadel.

Early Morning Visit to Machu Picchu

We begin the day early with breakfast at your hotel in Aguas Calientes (around 5:00 a.m.). Afterward, we take the bus up to Machu Picchu, a scenic 25-minute ride that brings you directly to the entrance. The gates open at 6:00 a.m., allowing you to enter one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.

Upon arrival, you will need to present your passport for entry. Visiting Machu Picchu early in the morning, right after completing the Inca Trail in 2 days, offers a quieter and more immersive experience before larger crowds arrive.

Machu Picchu Circuits and Guided Tour

When you book the 2-day Inca Trail, your ticket automatically includes Circuit 3, which covers important areas of Machu Picchu. However, Circuit 2 is considered the most complete route, offering access to the main viewpoints and archaeological sectors.

We highly recommend booking Circuit 2 at least 3 months in advance is extra 60 usd, as availability is limited and it significantly enhances your overall experience during the Short Inca Trail 2 days.

During your guided tour, you will explore key areas of Machu Picchu while learning about its history, architecture, and cultural significance within the Inca civilization.

Optional Huayna Picchu Hike

If you have booked the Huayna Picchu hike (additional cost of $60 USD per person, not included), your entrance time will typically be scheduled between 7:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m.

This optional hike offers one of the most iconic panoramic views of Machu Picchu and is a great addition to your short Inca Trail experience. Please confirm your exact entry time with your guide so we can coordinate your visit accordingly.

Return to Cusco after the Inca Trail 2 Days

After your guided visit to Machu Picchu, we take the bus back down to Aguas Calientes, where you will have free time to enjoy lunch (not included).

In the afternoon, you will board the train to Ollantaytambo, followed by private transportation back to Cusco. At the end of your inca trail 2 days experience, we will drop you off directly at your hotel.

  • Meals: Breakfast
  • Highest Altitude: 2,440 m / 8,052 ft
  • Lowest Altitude: 2,040 m / 6,691 ft

Important Information for Visiting Machu Picchu

Before you go to: Permits, weather and difficulty

The Short Inca Trail 2 Days is the perfect option for those who want to experience the beauty and history of the classic Inca Trail in a shorter time. This trek combines stunning Andean landscapes, Inca ruins, and the unforgettable arrival at Machu Picchu through the Sun Gate (Inti Punku). Here’s everything you need to know before you go.

1. Permits & booking in advance

The Short Inca Trail requires a special permit, just like the classic 4-day Inca Trail. These permits are limited and sell out quickly, especially during peak season (May to September). It’s recommended to book at least 3-6 months in advance to secure your spot.

2. Best time to do the trek

The best months to hike the Short Inca Trail are:

  • Dry season (April to October): Sunny days, clear views, and comfortable trekking conditions.
  • Rainy season (November to March): Fewer crowds but higher chances of rain and cloudy views.
  • February: The Inca Trail is closed for maintenance.

3. Physical preparation & difficulty level

The Short Inca Trail is moderate in difficulty, covering 10 km (6.2 miles) on the first day. Expect:

  • 4-6 hours of hiking, including steep steps and uphill sections.
  • An altitude range between 2,000m – 2,720m (6,560ft – 8,924ft), lower than the classic Inca Trail but still requiring acclimatization.
  • No camping required – you’ll spend the night in a comfortable Aguas Calientes hotel before visiting Machu Picchu.

4. Accommodation

This tour includes one night in a 3-star hotel in Aguas Calientes, including wifi connection, private rooms and facilities. Please drop us a message if you’d like to upgrade your hotel in Aguas Calientes.

5. Machu Picchu Circuits for the short Inca Trail 2 days

The 2-day Inca Trail tour includes a guided visit to Machu Picchu via Circuit 2 or 3, depending on availability. Circuit 2 is the most complete route, covering the main archaeological areas and viewpoints.

  • Important: Spaces for circuit 2 usually sell out during the high season (June-September). If Circuit 2 is available for your date, we’ll reserve it for you. Otherwise, we’ll book Circuit 1 or 3 or the next best available option.

To secure the best experience, we recommend booking at least 3 months in advance.
