2 Day Inca Trail

Inca Trail 2 Days is the best option for those who don’t have enough time or don’t want to spend four days on the Inca Trail. This trail covers the longest sections of the route, offering breathtaking scenery, diverse flora and fauna, and allows you to visit famous sites like Chachabamba and Wiñay Wayna. The accessible and assisted hiking route is relatively short, at only 12 km (7 miles), which can be completed in six or seven hours, providing a shorter but more authentic Inca Trail experience.

One of the advantages is that you arrive at Machu Picchu through the Sun Gate; this way, you can see the citadel twice: in the afternoon and again the following morning. This allows you to enjoy Machu Picchu at different times of day. It’s ideal for those who want to experience Machu Picchu and the Inca Trail in the simplest yet most memorable way.

Our professional guides will share the most enriching stories and secrets of this ancient mystery. We also handle the logistics, such as permits, tickets, and transportation, and offer a hassle-free hotel pick-up and drop-off service. The experience itself is all we need

Highlights of the Inca Trail 2 Days  ( Best way to discover the Machu

Picchu)

  • You’ll hike for your first breathtaking view of the Lost City.
  • Upon reaching Wiñayhuayna, you’ll enjoy lunch with views of Machu Picchu Mountain and the snow-capped Veronica (depending on your pace, you can also have lunch at the Sun Gate for an impressive view of Machu Picchu).
  • Follow in the historical footsteps of the Incas and connect with the past.
  • Visit Inca archaeological sites with a professional from Go Treks Peru, who will explain the history and introduce you to the people.
  • Spend one night in a comfortable hotel in Aguas Calientes (Qoya Palace or Pukara Machu Picchu).

Itinerary of Inca Trail 2 Days:

Day 1: Cusco - Ollantaytambo - Km 104 - Aguas Calientes

Early in the morning, we will transfer you to your hotel in Cusco to begin the 2-day Inca Trail trek to Machu Picchu. After arriving in Ollantaytambo, you will take a train to kilometer 104 (the starting point of the trek). Once there, you will need to get off the train and take the classic photo with a sign for the 2-day Inca Trail.

Local rangers will check your travel permit and passport. Our trek will begin with a small bridge and a short climb to Chachabamba, a lesser-known but impressive Inca site.

Chachabamba

bamba:Chachabamba is located at 2,150 meters (almost 7,053 feet) above sea level and features a rock altar that was used as a center of worship for Inti, the Sun God, and the Apus, the mountain spirits traditionally venerated by the Incas. A day hike followed by a stay in natural hot springs is the perfect way to relax after a long day of trekking.

Wiñay Wayna:

After Chachabamba, we hike for approximately four hours to Winay Wayna. Known as “eternally young” in Quechua, the most beautiful point along the trail is at 2,650 meters (8,694 feet). Formerly an administrative center of Machu Picchu, it features 20 urban areas, agricultural lands, and places of worship. The most spectacular is the Temple of the Seven Windows, built in honor of the rainbow. Our guide will provide a guided tour. Afterward, we will stop for lunch. You can use the restrooms afterward, and then we will continue to our next destination, Intipunku (Sungate).

Intipunku:

Winay Wayna is about an hour from Intipunku. It’s a trekking segment that takes us through a tropical rainforest. Next to the Sun Gate, you’ll have a panoramic view of the Machu Picchu citadel, nestled between Huayna Picchu and the Machu Picchu mountains. Access to the citadel for hikers is through the Sun Gate for those on the Classic Inca Trail and the Short Inca Trail. We’ll take our time to enjoy the view. Then, we’ll continue for 45 minutes to the viewpoint where you’ll have time to take photos. There are about three viewpoints (remember, the first day is dedicated to photos at the viewpoints, and the second day is the tour of the lower section, Circuit 3, but you also have the option to book Circuit 2 depending on availability). Afterward, we’ll leave the citadel, and a bus will take you to Aguas Calientes, where we’ll check you into a hotel. Aguas Calientes boasts hot springs. This is a great place to relax after a long day of hiking and spend the night enjoying the natural thermal waters. There are also several shops in town selling souvenirs, and we’ll have dinner in the evening.

The 2 day Inca Trail: the first day is 12 km or 7.5 miles. You’ll need to bring a 25-liter backpack to carry your clothes, snacks, and a box lunch. If you don’t want to carry your backpack, you can book a porter, but please contact us first.

Day 2: Aguas Calientes - Machu Picchu - Cusco

Exploring the iconic Machu Picchu

Day 2 is dedicated exclusively to exploring Machu Picchu. We’ll start with breakfast at the hotel (5:00 a.m.) and then board the bus up to Machu Picchu. The ride takes about 25 minutes and drops us off right at the entrance (the gate opens at 6:00 a.m.). Once there, we’ll show our passports. When you book the Inca Trail 2 Days package, you automatically get Circuit 3, but Circuit 2 is the best route, so we recommend booking at least 3 months in advance for an additional $60 USD.

After touring Machu Picchu, we’ll take the bus down to Aguas Calientes, where you’ll have time for lunch (not included). In the afternoon, you’ll board the train to Ollantaytambo town and then continue by bus to Cusco, where we’ll drop you off at your hotel.

If you’ve booked tickets for Huayna Picchu (not included), your hike will start at  10:00 a.m. The hike to the top takes about 45 minutes, so it’s a great addition if you want to enjoy those extra views. Just let us know in advance, or check with your Tour Guide for the best timing according to your trip schedule.

In the afternoon, we’ll head back to Aguas Calientes and take the 16:20 train* to reach the town of Ollantaytambo. Upon arrival at Ollantaytambo, we will have transportation waiting to drive you back to your hotel in Cusco (2 hours approx).

*This tour includes the tourist class train, but you can upgrade to the Vistadome panoramic train for an extra $80 USD. Train options are subject to availability.

  • Tour duration: 3 hours in Machu Picchu
  • Highest Altitude: 2,440 m / 8,052 ft

Before you go to: Permits, weather, and difficulty

The Short Inca Trail 2 Days is the perfect option for those who want to experience the beauty and history of the classic Inca Trail in a shorter time. This trek combines stunning Andean landscapes, Inca ruins, and the unforgettable arrival at Machu Picchu through the Sun Gate (Inti Punku). Here’s everything you need to know before you go.

1. Permits & booking in advance

The Short Inca Trail requires a special permit, just like the classic 4-day Inca Trail. These permits are limited and sell out quickly, especially during peak season (May to September). It’s recommended to book at least 3-6 months in advance to secure your spot.

2. Best time to do the trek

The best months to hike the Short Inca Trail are:

  • Dry season (April to October): Sunny days, clear views, and comfortable trekking conditions.
  • Rainy season (November to March): Fewer crowds but higher chances of rain and cloudy views.
  • February: The Inca Trail is closed for maintenance.

3. Physical preparation & difficulty level

The Short Inca Trail is moderate in difficulty, covering 10 km (6.2 miles) on the first day. Expect:

  • 4-6 hours of hiking, including steep steps and uphill sections.
  • An altitude range between 2,000m and 2,720m (6,560ft – 8,924ft), lower than the classic Inca Trail but still requiring acclimatization.
  • No camping required – you’ll spend the night in a comfortable Aguas Calientes hotel before visiting Machu Picchu.

4. Accommodation

This tour includes one night in a 3-star hotel in Aguas Calientes, including wifi connection, private rooms and facilities. Please drop us a message if you’d like to upgrade your hotel in Aguas Calientes.

5. Machu Picchu Circuits for the short Inca Trail 2 days

The 2-day Inca Trail tour includes a guided visit to Machu Picchu via Circuit 2 or 3, depending on availability. Circuit 2 is the most complete route, covering the main archaeological areas and viewpoints.

  • Important: Spaces for circuit 2 usually sell out during the high season (June-September). If Circuit 2 is available for your date, we’ll reserve it for you. Otherwise, we’ll book Circuit 1 or 3, or the next best available option.

To secure the best experience, we recommend booking at least 3 months in advance.

Which difficulties or challenges can you face during the 2-day short trial?

The 2 day Short trail can be described as medium with a combination of an uphill and downhill route, although not as demanding as compared to that of the entire 4-day trail.

Is the Short Inca Trail easy enough?

The Short trail is suggested to be suitable when an individual is of a medium level of fitness with some basic hiking experience.

Is it possible to hike the 2-day Inca Trail without the guidance?

No, the 2-day circuit, just like the traditional Inca trail, requires a licensed guide as per the policies of the national park.

How long should I be able to book the Short Inca Trail?

Obtaining a permit is recommended at least 3 -6 months in advance, and especially in high seasons (June to September), when there are few permits.

Is the tour limited to a certain age of hiking?

Despite the fact that the 2-day Short Trail is easier than the entire 4-day trek, the age requirement is 12-70 years ol,d with the potential exceptions depending on the fitness level an individual can possess.

Do you offer any child or student discounts?

Some of them also provide reduced prices to children or students, but that will depend on the particular tour operator; this is best asked during the booking process.

What would happen if I canceled my 2-day Inca Trail booking?

The cancellation policies vary with the operators; most of them carry strict punishment because of the intense demand of permits and hence they may lose part or all of the deposit in case they cancel at the last minute.

Is it possible to climb up Huaynapicchu or Machupicchu Mountain?

In case you would like to see the two mountains at the top, you will have to purchase another permit; these climbs were not included in the regular tour.

What will happen after I complete the 2-day Inca Trail?

When visiting Machu Picchu, the participant will take the train to Ollantaytambo or Aguas TDM who will then take him/her to a Cusco hotel.
