Inca Trail 3 Days to Machu Picchu

Inca Trail 3 days, is considered one of the most famous climbs in travel literature and offers any scholar or traveler the opportunity to hike short sections of the ancient stone walkways built by the great Inca civilization to the imposing citadel of Machu Picchu. This route is part of the larger Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, a pre-existing network of roads known as Qhapaq Ñan that connected the vast territory of the Inca Empire in the Andean highlands.

This road system was the creation of the Incas, who, more than five hundred years ago, employed advanced civil engineering techniques to lay out paths and construct stone steps, tunnels, and drainage systems that could withstand the harsh landscape, becoming part of important religious, administrative, and urban centers throughout their empire.

For most visitors, walking on the same terrain that the Incas once traversed is a profound experience. The trail offers a personal connection to history and serves as a conduit for exploring remote Andean landscapes, still brimming with natural beauty and archaeological sites. The Inca Trail is not your average tourist excursion; it combines physical exertion with cultural enrichment, offering the chance to see ancient ruins, cloud forests, mountain passes, and river valleys without breaking the bank. It’s an adventure that millions of tourists dream of long before even arriving in Peru.

Currently, the 3-day Inca Trail itinerary is tailored for those who wish to experience the essence of the traditional route in a shorter timeframe. While the Classic Inca Trail takes 4 days, the abbreviated 3-day version still covers the most rewarding parts of the journey, including visits to ancient Inca ruins, breathtaking mountain scenery, and the final stage of access to Machu Picchu through the ancient Sun Gate, where most hikers describe the discovery of the citadel as one of the most moving and memorable experiences of their lives.

The expedition begins at the start of the trail that runs alongside kilometer 82 of the road leading to the Amazon basin, connecting Cusco to the highway. Along the way, hikers also find evidence of Inca engineering: small archaeological sites that served as stations or resting places for Inca messengers and travelers. These ruins are a testament to the ingenious people who inhabited the highlands long before the invention of the wheel, without draft animals, and built hundreds of kilometers of roads.

The Peruvian government has developed permits for the Inca Trail to preserve the environment along its length and protect the delicate nature of the trail. The trail has a limited number of visitors, certified guides, and porters available daily, and many reservations take several months to fill. This means that most travelers will choose to hire a licensed tour operator to benefit from obtaining the necessary permits and logistical support for their adventure.

Hikers who have completed the three-day trek and reached Machu Picchu not only experience the very best of hiking, as it is one of the most iconic trails in the world, but also gain a deeper understanding of Inca history, breathtaking views of the Andes, and get to feel the essence of trekking in one of South America’s most legendary locations.

Itinerary of Inca Trail 3 Days: the challenge of km 82 to machu picchu:

Day 1: CUSCO - KM 82 - HUAYLLABAMBA - LLULLUCHAPAMPA

The adventure begins early in the morning with transportation from Cusco. We’ll then head to Ollantaytambo for breakfast (not included). Afterward, we’ll travel to kilometer 82 (the starting point of the trek) where we’ll discover the ancient stone corridor and begin exploring this historic and famous hiking route, built over five centuries ago during the Inca Empire.

The first day of trekking is well-planned to allow for comfortable acclimatization to the changing terrain and altitude. The trail will traverse beautiful Andean landscapes, verdant valleys, streams, and ancient agricultural areas. Along the way, the guide will provide brief historical commentary on the Inca road system, explaining how it once connected various administrative centers, temples, and cities of the empire.

Later in the expedition, we’ll encounter modest archaeological remains hidden in the terrain, such as Llactapata. These ruins served as resting places or logistical checkpoints for Inca travelers and messengers. They offer a realistic glimpse into the daily life and organizational system of this civilized society. Afterward, we will head to the village of Huayllabamba for lunch.

In the afternoon, the trail leading to the Ayapata campsite becomes increasingly steep. We will then arrive at the Llulluchapampa campsite. This campsite is located in a peaceful mountain landscape with spectacular views of the surrounding mountains. Upon arrival, the tents will be set up, and you can enjoy a freshly prepared dinner. As night falls, the solitude of the place makes for excellent stargazing, providing a glorious and peaceful end to the first day of the Inca Trail.

  • Hiking Distance: 14 km/8.2 miles
  • Approx. Hike Time: 8 hours
  • Cusco’s Altitude:  3, 350 m/11,988 ft.

Day 2: LLULLUCHAPAMPA - RUNKURAKAY PASS - WIÑAYHUYNA

The second day begins with an early breakfast followed by an exploration of the Andes Mountains. This section of the trail is considered the most scenic, as the landscape undergoes a dramatic transformation throughout the day. The trail leads into the cloud forest, where lush vegetation, orchids, mossy trees, and cascading waterfalls create a sense of serenity and relaxation.

Along the way, the original Inca staircases and terraces are easily visible, showcasing their incredible engineering prowess. The guide explains how these routes were meticulously designed to withstand extreme weather conditions, seamlessly integrating with the mountainous terrain. Several archaeological sites are visited, demonstrating the spiritual and practical significance of the trail, such as Runkurakay and Phuyuputamarka.

The visit to Winay Wayna, an Inca ruin that exemplifies this type of construction, is the highlight of the day. The site is known for its well-preserved agricultural terraces, ritual buildings, and water sources, all of which blend Inca architecture with nature. Surrounded by verdant waves and flowing waters, Winayñaya is a magnet for photography and exploration.

After settling in, the group heads to a nearby campsite. Dinner is served in a serene setting, surrounded by the sounds of nature. The Winayñaya campsite provides a sense of satisfaction and anticipation for the final day of the journey.

Heading towards the Sun Gate under the early morning sun, they arrive at a spot where Machu Picchu slowly reveals itself, unfolding below them, usually shrouded in clouds. This is the first glimpse of the ancient citadel, a moving and memorable experience for most participants.

After enjoying the view, the group heads to Machu Picchu. The main areas of the site, including temples, plazas, and agricultural terraces, are presented through a guided tour, and the historical and cultural significance of the site is explained. Certainly. On the three-day excursion of the Inca trail, you can leave your baggage in our office, or in either case, in your local lodgings and then the explanation is quite clear. Please make sure that you only carry with you the things that you will need to spend the three days in the excursion to Machu Picchu.

How much balance compulsory required for the tour?

The balance amount has to be paid at least 2 days before departure in either US dollars or Peruvian soles. In case you decide to pay using PayPal, you should not pay before one week before the services, but the service charge is 7% of the total payment. The fee on credit card settlement is 5% fee. Please tell us what you intend to do; the cash should be in advance, not later than two days before the journey.

What is the discount for students?

According to Peruvian laws, to be able to get the student concession, the traveler needs to be younger than eighteen years old on the expedition day; those eighteen or more must show a valid student ID. The discount for US shoulders to students between the ages of eleven and seventeen stands at a discount. The discount includes US-40 for children aged 2-10. This concession can only be redeemed by submitting a passport and the student card at the time of the booking process.

Is it possible to change the date of departure after the purchase of the permits?

Unfortunately, the date is not changeable after the purchase of the permits. The Peruvian government forbids any changes to the three days Inca trail permit once they has been issued; the permit is not transferable or refundable. The passport number is the only field of data that can be changed.

What is the difficulty of the short Inca Trail?

The Short Inca trail can be graded as follows: Day 1 is considered to be associated with an easy terrain; Day 2 is of moderate to difficult scale; Day 3 goes again to easy grounds. The participants are expected to prepare for the journey in proper physical shape and condition.

Should I carry my original passport on the short Inca trail, 3 days to Machu Picchu?

Yes, you have to carry your original passport. It is essential to ensure this passport is related to the one you had provided when you had booked the permit in Short Inca Trail. The passport will be checked at the Short Inca Trail checkpoint, on reaching Machu Picchu, and when one is going to board the train.

Can I update passport numbers?

In case you are renewing your passport, please provide a copy of your old one so that it becomes easy to buy your Inca Trail permits. Where the old passport is gone, any similarly named one assigned by the government is acceptable. With the new passport received, we should immediately send a copy of the same to allow us to revise the permit details.

When does my train ticket run?

On the first day, the 02:55 3 pm service is back on the 2nd day, which will enable you to arrive at Cusco by 07:30 pm, and your conventional reservation is the 06:10 10 am service at Ollantaytambo. Such a program will allow a substantial amount of time for rest and the potential for other tours, like Palcoyo Mountain. The most common outbound schedule to use when making a reservation for the Vista-dome experience is at 3:48 am or 4:22 am; thus, the normal arrival time at Cusco is at 8:00 pm.

Can I spend 3 days in the Sacred Valley on my Inca Trail?

No. The tour starts in Cusco and fails to include the Sacred Valley as a place of stay.

Is it possible I reserve my own hotel in Aguas Calientes and Ollantaytambo?

You may make your own room in either Aguas Calientes or Ollantaytambo. Privatizing accommodation can also save the total expedition costs by US$65 per member. In case you decide to do so, please give us the accommodations that you prefer so that the guide can make the required departures.

Should the Inca Trail be Pet-Friendly?

Unfortunately, there are no pets in the Short Inca Trail and Machu Picchu, except guide dogs, which are certified. These, too, are liable to permit reason.
