Tambopata National Reserve 4 Days

This 4-day tour begins the moment you reach Puerto Maldonado. Staff from GO TREKS PERU greet you at the hotel, Airbnb, or airport and give a short overview of the coming days. Our own private transportation then moves you to the city office, where you can leave items you prefer not to carry into the forest.

If your arrival schedule allows, you can walk around the main square before the 11:00 a.m. departure. The spot shows where two rivers join and gives an early sense of the waterways ahead.

At 11:00 a.m., the drive reaches the boat pier. You board the motorized boat with operators who know every bend of the river. The 40-minute ride passes through a forest that grows thicker until the lodge appears. A drink made from local tropical fruits waits on arrival. After check-in, you settle into your bungalow.

In the afternoon, the group meets for the canopy walk briefing at 2:30 p.m. At 3:00 p.m., everyone walks a short distance to the raised paths. Guides explain the plants and point out animals that stay out of sight from below. The activity mixes steady movement with quiet stops.

At 4:30 p.m., the zip-lining part starts. Trained staff first go over safety steps. You cross 190-meter lines and a 75-meter suspension bridge. The height gives new views of the forest layers.

After the return at 5:30 p.m., a meal prepared with local items is served. Free time follows for resting in hammocks or walking the grounds.

At 6:30 p.m., life vests come out, and the kayak safety talk begins. At 7:00 p.m., the group paddles toward Monkey Island with a support boat always close. Guides describe how the monkeys live together and spread seeds while you watch their play. The return happens at 8:00 p.m.

Later at 9:00 p.m., the night caiman safari starts. The guide uses a light to find caimans on the banks and other animals active after dark. You return at 10:00 p.m. for the second dinner service and then have free time before sleep.

The full day centers on Sandoval Lake. Breakfast starts at 7:00 a.m. At 8:00 a.m., the motorized boat leaves for the lake entrance, a ride of about 10 minutes. Guides note birds along the way.

At 8:10 a.m., registration finishes at the counter. The 3-kilometer walk around the lake edge begins at 8:30 a.m. and takes roughly 45 minutes at a calm pace. Guides name birds found only in this area and explain plants used by local people for food and medicine.

At 9:30 a.m., the group reaches a shallow section for swimming. After the swim comes a rest at 10:30 a.m. while the guide describes how the lake formed long ago.

The group returns to the lodge for lunch at 11:30 a.m. The meal uses fish from the reserve and vegetables grown locally.

At 1:00 p.m., paddle boats go onto the lake. This quiet movement lets everyone watch birds and, with luck, giant river otters hunting in family groups. Guides explain their recovery and the need to protect their home. The return to shore happens at 3:00 p.m.

Free time at 4:00 p.m. lets guests rest in hammocks. Dinner service runs at 6:00 p.m. The evening stays open for optional activities or quiet rest.

Breakfast begins at 7:00 a.m. At 8:30 a.m., the guided walk heads to the nearby indigenous family settlement. At 9:30 a.m., the families share their daily practices, plant uses, and building methods. Guides translate and add background.

The group returns for lunch at 12:00 p.m. Rest follows at 2:00 p.m.

At 4:00 p.m., the boat leaves for the fishing spot. From 5:00 p.m., guests try for catfish, maiden fish, sardine fish, or piranhas under guide supervision. The activity teaches sustainable methods and fish roles in the system.

Sunset viewing from the boat starts at 6:30 p.m. The return to the lodge happens at 7:00 p.m. Dinner service runs at 8:00 p.m., and rest time begins at 9:30 p.m.

The last day starts early. At 4:30 a.m., a light breakfast appears before the 5:00 a.m. boat departure. The ride moves upriver in low light.

At 6:00 a.m., the group reaches the observation point at the parrot clay lick. From 6:30 a.m., hundreds of macaws and parrots arrive to eat clay. Guides explain the reason for the behavior and name the species by calls.

The birds begin to leave at 7:30 a.m. The boat returns to the lodge for a full breakfast at 8:30 a.m.

At 10:00 a.m., the final boat ride heads back to Puerto Maldonado. Arrival at the port comes at 10:40 a.m. Luggage is collected from the GO TREKS PERU office at 11:00 a.m. Private transportation then takes everyone to the airport or bus terminal at 11:30 a.m. One representative from GO TREKS PERU stays aware of the full schedule the entire time.
