Waqrapukara, also known as Huaca de Piedra (Stone Temple), is a pre-Columbian Inca ruin dating back to the 14th century. Itinerary of Waqrapukara trek 1 day:

Day 1: Cusco - Cusipata - Apurimaq cañon - Waqrapukara

The trip to Waqrapukara starts very early in the morning, as we leave the city of Cusco by private transport at 4 am. We travel south on a paved road towards the city of Puno, passing through charming and friendly villages and the impressive Pomacanchis lagoon. After reaching the Huascar junction, the road turns to hardened dirt as we continue towards Huayqui (3350m/10,991ft) – the starting point of our Waqrapukara trek.

Before starting our hike, we will have a delicious local breakfast with a family. From there, we hike for approximately 1.5 hours to Suythuwanca, followed by another scenic 1.5-hour hike uphill with ancient rock paintings in these places, worth stopping for a moment to take pictures. Finally, we arrive at Waqrapukara (4,150 m) and rest before exploring the vast Inca fortress.

Signs will guide us through the different structures of the site, including the horn-shaped rock formations that gave Waqrapukara its name. After about an hour of exploration, we make our way back to the starting point, enjoying the breathtaking views of the mountains for the last time. Our trip ends with the return by car to Cusco at approximately 7:00 pm.

In conclusion, this day hike is definitely worth it for the breathtaking views and the off-the-beaten-path.
